FORT GREENE — May the best beverage win.
Wine and beer lovers have the chance to vote on their favorite drink under the vaulted, marble ceiling of the former Williamsburgh Savings Bank clock tower during the first annual “Judgement of Brooklyn” event in Fort Greene.
Participants can choose from among 64 sauvignon blancs, rieslings, IPAs, lagers as well as other varieties hand-selected by the some of the most respected wine and beer programs in Brooklyn including St. Anselm, Bierkraft and 4th Avenue Pub, while munching on food from Roberta’s Pizza, Blue Ribbon and Buttermilk Channel.
Organizer Michael Brooks, owner of Bed-Stuy’s Bed-Vyne Wine shop, hopes that this event will help to put Brooklyn’s culinary scene on the map.
“Judgement of Brooklyn will be a historic event,” he said. “We want this to be an annual festival that drives tourism and gives Brooklyn an identity as a food and drink destination.”
The event’s name is based on the 1976 “Judgement of Paris,” which showcased the wine scene in California.
“Just as the original “Judgement” put the spotlight on California winemaking, so will we with Brooklyn’s wine and food culture,” the site says.
Guests can compare their picks to those of professional judges — including Jimmy’s No. 43 owner Jimmy Carbone, Elizabeth Zalarick, certified cicerone and beer buyer for Whole Foods and Alex Miranda, Wine Director at Bid in Sotheby’s — who are set to blindly taste test selections prior to the event.
Anthony Giglio, author of three editions of the FOOD+WINE Wine Guide, was tapped to host the tasting while Brooklyn jazz ensemble, Jeff King Band, and DJ WonderGround provide the tunes.
General admission tickets — about 1,200 are available — cost $55 and include unlimited tasting and Hors d’oeuvres. Judgement of Brooklyn starts at 7 p.m. on May 17.
